Russian and Belarusian athletes banned from the 2022 World Games

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the International Olympic Committee’s executive board has recommended sports federation ban Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from the 2022 World Cup.

Nick Sellers Chief executive World Games 2022 and Mayor Randall Woodfin, Birmingham Mayor also expressed their concerns on the move at the Kiwanis Club in the Alabama City. At the upcoming major Sporting events, across 27 events, a total of 69 athletes from Russia and 11 athletes in 9 events from Belarus were going to participate.

The event is expected to take place from 7th July and will last till 17th July, when 52 powerful athletes from Ukraine along with their delegations in 11 sports will feature at the World Games. All the important sports organizations from across the world have supported the move by the IOC by refusing to host or play against Russian counterparts. Also, it was on Friday, this statement was released shortly before the onset of the Beijing Paralympics Games. It was on Wednesday, the International Paralympic Committee had a meeting to discuss Russia’s participation ahead of the Games.

Also FIFA and UEFA one of the major soccer governing bodies supported IOC’s statement claiming the suspension of Russia’s national and club teams from all future competitions until further notice.

USOPC on Monday released a statement “ As the world watches in horror while Russia brazenly attacks the innocent people and athletes of Ukraine, this is the only acceptable action to be taken until peace has been restored”.

IOC has strongly urged the federations to ban Russian or Belarus athletes or sports officials under the name of Russia or Belarus.
